    Bhajan, the word common to most North Indian languages, means a devotional song. The conventional way to categorize devotional feeling is with the terms sagun and nirgun. Using simple language and everyday imagery, bhajans conveys a deeper meaning associated with life.

    Sufi devotional music

    Sufi music is a form of devotional music which is inspired by the works of Sufi poets. Though Qawwali is the most popular form of Sufi music, there are numerous musical traditions that are connected to the practice of Sufism.

    Baul Fakiri

    Baul are a group of mystic minstrels from Bengal. Bauls constitute both a syncretic religious sect and a musical tradition. Baul Sangeet, a particular type of folk song, celebrates celestial love through declarations of love by the Baul for his bosh-tomi or life-mate. Essentially an oral tradition, its lyrics carry influences of the Hindu bhakti movements and the suphi, a form of Sufi song exemplified by the songs of Kabir.
