You receive a piece of paper in the mailbox, an invitation to a celebration. What do you do with it? Do you hang it up next to your calendar or carelessly throw it on your kitchen table? This piece of mail says more about you, and your relation to it, than you may think. While ephemera can easily be overlooked as just another piece of paper, the closer that we examine what is written, its' context, and its' time period, a new story begins to emerge. This exhibition will explore performing arts ephemera and its inferences about the culture and values surrounding dance in India and in the Indian diaspora. By the end, I hope you gain an understanding that ephemera is more than just a temporary item, but in itself, a time capsule.
