The narrative epic, in the voice of the bards, seamlessly moves between character-to-character dialogues, narrative passages describing the scene, and songs. The bard did not divide the story into these episodes, but this episodic timeline of the Annanmar Katai is inspired by Brenda Beck’s division of the dictated story into twenty-six episodes. This timeline is designed to have two ways of looking at the epic; the ‘Top’ section is an adult-friendly one, and the story is sutured through songs narrated by lead characters, such as Tankal, Ponnar, Kunnutaiyya or Tamarai, and the section below is for children and is the story through the perspective of the animals in the epic, such as Kompan the boar, Ponnachi the dog or Nila, the horse. A summary, the scene, a song, a picture, and sometimes the Tamil transcription of the performance accompanies the episodic snippet. The digital Illustrations in this section are courtesy of Brenda Beck and the Sophia Hilton Foundation.
