While Louise Lightfoot was a Westerner, her impact on India and Kathakali is demonstrated with this commemorative performance, presented during India’s 50th independence celebration. The choreographer of the piece, Tara Rajkumar, is distinguished as an Indian diasporic dancer, who contributed to Indian art in Australia and England. It is significant for the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) to invite this performance to India, recognizing the impact that both Lightfoot and Rajkumar had on classical dance. This demonstrates that through the years, classical dance has become less insular, with artists spreading the medium beyond India and paving the way for those who reside outside the subcontinent to participate.
