DIASPORA AND MUSIC IN INDIA

The music of India includes the music of communities that have made India their home, and carries elements of music of the homeland. Similarly the Indian diaspora in various part of the world have carried the music of their communities to other lands merging it with the local music. The Caribbean Chutney is one such example, and Bhojpuri music traveled with the indentured labour to many such lands. Similarly India is home to the African Sidi community whose music and dance retain strong African influences. ARCE has a rich collection of these materials and also held a festival called Remembered Rhythms, from which materials will be drawn for this exhibition.
