Pasupatesvara temple, Allur, Tamil ...

The deity enshrined in the Pasupatesvara temple at Allur is called in inscriptions Tiru Vadagudi Paramesvarar or Mahadevar. It is assigned to the age of Parantaka I (907 - 955 CE) on the basis of an inscription on the half hall (ardhamandapa). It is a single-storeyed stone temple. The crowning cupola (sikhara) is bulbous and is heavily stuccoed. All the divinity niche images (devakostha) are missing but the original figure of Dakshinamurti lies mutilated under a mango tree close by. Inside the entrance hall (mukhmandapa) there are sculptures of Bhikshatanar, Chandesvarar, Karttikeya and Surya. References: S.R. Balasubrahmanyam, 1971, pp. 12-15, D. Barrett, 1974, pp. 72-73.

Pralayakalesvara temple, Pennakadam...

The Pralayakalesvara temple at Pennakadam is wholly apsidal - one of the few kinds in the Chola country. Another example of an apsidal temple is the main temple at Muyarchchinadesvarar; a large number of apsidal temples are however found in Tondai-nadu. This is a small-medium, single storeyed (alpavimana), east facing temple. An interesting feature of this temple is that the gable is profusely covered with modern stuccowork. Reference: S.R. Balasubrahmanyam, 1971, p. 190, M.W. Meister and M.A. Dhaky 1963, p. 257.

Ramanathan kovil complex, Pattisvar...

The Ramanathan kovil at Pattisvaram was built possibly by Rajendra Chola I in or slightly before his seventh year (1019 CE) to commemorate the death of his pious step-mother Panchavan Mahadevi. The single storeyed tower (ektala) and the half-hall (ardhmandapa) belong to this date. The linga inside the sanctum sanctorum (garbhagriha) is prismatic perhaps following the Pallava vogue. Ramanathasvami complex, Tirurameswa...

The earliest inscription on the Ramanathasvami temple at Tirurameswaram is of the seventeenth year of Sundara Chola - 974 CE. A similar date for the temple is supported by fabric, style and by the typology of the image. Reference: M.W. Meister and M.A. Dhaky, 1963, p.181.

Ramanathesvara temple, Esalam, Tami...

Ramanathesvara temple, Esalam, Tamil NaduThe Ramanathesvara temple at Esalam is a fine one storeyed superstructure (ektala vimana) with a square body, bhadra projections and with circular neck (griva), crowning cupola (sikhara) and metal finial (stupi). Stylistically this temple belongs to the period of Rajaraja I (985 – 1014 CE) though there aren't any contemporary inscriptions. References: M.W. Meister and M.A. Dhaky, 1963, p. 228.
