Subject: A male rider on a fully caparisoned horse, Right profile view. It was executed in a double-mold technique of casting that was popular during the Satavahana period from 99 BCE - 299 CE. The sculpture was discovered at Ter in Maharashtra, an important trade centre on the ancient Maritime Silk Route. Ter has been identified as Tagara, mentioned in The Periplus of the Erythraean Sea. The Periplus of the Erythraean Sea is a Greco-Roman periplus (travel-log) that describes navigation and trading opportunities from Roman Egyptian ports along the Red Sea, the Horn of Africa, the Persian Gulf, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean, including the modern Sindh region of Pakistan and the southwestern regions of India.
