Progress toward the three-dimensional statue.

For any transformation away from the earlier archaic emphasis on the frontal view to come into fashion, an entirely new aesthetic focus would have to have been achieved with a good deal of experimentation, in order that the figure might then be released from its imprisonment in the sheer massiveness of the original block.
