Firuz Shah Tughluk's Palace Complex, Hisar

The Hisar district is located on the eastern side of Haryana. During pre-Mughal times the place was known as Hizar-i-Firuza which was located at a strategic point where the old Delhi-Multan route branched to Khurasan. This city was founded by Firoz Shah as a challenging attempt to reclaim this barren tract of desert. Shams Siraj records that Firoz Shah took personal interest in the construction of the town and the excavation of canals. The Palace of Firoz Shah is situated on the northwestern side of the ruined citadel-currently in the main market area of the Hisar city

Gujari Mahal, Hisar, Haryana

Remains of a large garden are found to the north of palace complex, inside the town wall and outside the citadel, in the center of Hisar city. It is now divided into small plots and a city road cuts into it. It stands on a massive platform made of rubble and mortar. The foundations are constructed of rubble and mortar and belong to the same period as Gurjari Mahal itself though they were smaller in size. Similar to the early Indo-Islamic monuments this building was constructed reusing the materials from probably ruins of north Indian Hindu temples. The floor is paved with bricks. The complex has nine tombs which belong to 17th or 18th century A.D. and do not seem to have any relation with the Gurjari Mahal. This was a secular structure. It is presumed to be built as an airy retreat away from the palace, for enjoying views over the gardens around, and cooled by the water flowing through the core of the platform.

Palace of Firuz Shah Tughluk

The Hisar district is located on the eastern side of Haryana. During pre-Mughal times the place was known as Hizar-i-Firuza which was located at a strategic point where the old Delhi-Multan route branched to Khurasan. This city was founded by Firoz Shah as a challenging attempt to reclaim this barren tract of desert. Shams Siraj records that Firoz Shah took personal interest in the construction of the town and the excavation of canals. The Palace of Firoz Shah is situated on the northwestern side of the ruined citadel-currently in the main market area of the Hisar city. It has only one entrance from Qila-ki-darwaza. The eastern area of the palace complex has British period buildings. The palace was originally conceived in three levels out of which the third level is completely lost and only the bases of a few columns and a number of loose column shafts remain. Much of the complex is fallen and other parts are filled with rubble and earth.
